Basic Information
Suginami Ward is located in the central western part of Tokyo’s 23 wards, with Nerima Ward to the north and Setagaya Ward to the south. It is one of the most inland areas among the 23 wards and ranks eighth in size. Since many stations in Suginami Ward are along the JR lines, transportation to the city center is very convenient, making it an excellent residential area for commuters and students. Additionally, there are many parks and bustling shopping streets, catering to the various leisure needs of the residents.
Highlights of the Ward
The most well-known area in Suginami Ward is Koenji, famous for its vintage shopping street, Koenji Junjo Shopping Street. Asagaya, close to Koenji, also boasts a unique shopping street, and Nishi-Ogikubo, which is similarly known for its variety of vintage shops. This highlights Suginami Ward as a district with a distinctive atmosphere, and it is very popular among young people. Anime enthusiasts will recognize Suginami Ward for its connection to the anime industry, as it is home to many animation production companies. In addition to the Suginami Animation Museum, you can even find a 3 meters tall Gundam statue outside Kami-igusa Station.
