Basic Information
Bunkyo Ward is located in the central-northern part of Tokyo’s 23 wards and ranks fourth smallest in terms of area. It is a representative cultural and educational area of Tokyo, home to Japan’s top university, the University of Tokyo. Since the Meiji period, it has been a residence for many literary figures, and the printing and publishing industries have flourished here. The rich cultural atmosphere, combined with a safe and tranquil living environment, attracts many people to live in Bunkyo Ward. The transportation network is also very convenient. Despite having many residential areas, there are also bustling and prosperous commercial districts to be found.
Highlights of the Ward
When mentioning Bunkyo Ward in Tokyo, the first impressions are the University of Tokyo, the top university in Japan, and Tokyo Dome near Korakuen Station. Next to Tokyo Dome is Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens in Tokyo. Additionally, in Tokyo’s old town area known as “Yanesen,” the “Ne” refers to “Nezu” in Bunkyo Ward. This area is home to many traditional shops and is famous for Nezu Shrine, one of Tokyo’s oldest shrines. Bunkyo Ward is filled with an academic and cultural atmosphere while also blending the traditional old town ambiance with modern urban prosperity, gradually becoming a popular destination for many tourists.
